Hoosick Falls
04:55
|
|||
They don't care about the water up in
Hoosick Falls
Let em drink cola I heard the governor call
and the sea is far and wide
a greyhound bus I ride
this land was never made for you and me
You know he fell off that scaffolding
whats his family going to do with him?
and we all threw in the collection envelope
it was dirty, crumpled, and very thin
A starving bear lost at sea
the sun beats it brow the whiteness
blinding while pink and blue balloons
fill up the massive room
a mother smiles another gift for
the perfect child
It used to be ya get your head cracked
out on the picket line
now they got you on your knees begging
for overtime
cause your lucky to have a job
maybe one day youll be a boss
your a scab, a pretender, a coward
The ones with money escaped to their seconds homes
and not a single one ever caught the cough
and we worked their place a while
its looks so good they said and smiled
so essential I heard them cackle
as the scraps did fall
They beat Thersites in the shadow of the one man
George Washington making a land grab
the bodies swung in the trees
the scalps lay thick as autumn leaves
with a powder-horn,a telescope, and the word of god
I was sitting by the hudson the ice did flow
a screech owl in a cedar tree was hunting the swamps
I was hunting too as Orion's belt shone through
the smog the metal cold of the moonless sky.

Sisters Kids
02:31
|
|||
The apartment was hot as hell
we were out on the street
send me down the corner store
get you something sweet
the night began to cool down
we went out for a ride
you said take me anywhere
with those sad eyes hungry eyes
I know you been waiting so long
I keep saying
I wish I hold my head up high
Promises I made but they there ain't
No time
You were waiting tables
I was nailing boards
work dried up in the winter time
bills can't afford
you cant take no time off formula the crib
I'll drop em off at your cousins house
with your sisters kids
I know you been waiting so long
I keep saying
I wish I hold my head up high
Promises I made but they there ain't
No time

Copake
03:24
|
|||
A raven flies over the Shagbark Hickory
whats sharper than the hunger?
a trembling a far thunder
reaches me standing in an arid creek
Gypsum, Flint
darkness adrift
A star falls a thrush calls
beckoning me
beckoning me
ever downward
It was a cold night in Copake
he blew his mind away
his Holsteins slain
the barn floor they lay
he had gone to town that day
to be sure his debts were paid
snow fell across the cruel landscape
the old timers in the diner sit and mull it over
they wanna know why he done what he done
its just hard making a living

Dodge Ram
02:51
|
|||
Daddy smacked up that Doge Ram
coming home from the bar again
me and my sister waiting by the window
all night
we ain't got to tell nobody
I'm the waitresses little darling
shoulder of the road I walk beside him
all the way home
I say hey
I don't care what they say
I always loved you anyway
Daddy smacked up that Doge Ram
coming home from the bar again
me and my Ma waiting by the window
all night
we ain't got to tell nobody
I'm the waitresses little darling
shoulder of the road I walk beside him
all the way home

Stewarts
04:05
|
|||
I was pulling into stewarts in the morning light grabbed a drink and a buttered roll handed the lady my money she handed me my change said
" I hope you have a good one"
But we both knew just what we couldn't do
When your living life on a string it don't take much
of anything to send you flyin or
send you strait on down to the bottom
Got my license suspended I can't pay the fine
I can't see those flashing lights
Now I'm doing 90 out on 87
he wants me stopping I ain't stopping
You the man he loves his gun
I got my foot on that pedal son
Cause when your living life on a string
it don't much of anything to send you flying
or send you strait down to the bottom
And you can keep on waiting on the day
but your day don't come
And you can keep on scratching that lotto
But your number don't come

Skippy
02:27
|
|||
It's hard stayin sober
when your kid don't invite you over
on the holiday
its hard coming home
all alone and the dog don't even wag his tail no more
Skippy was a pal of mine down Woodstock
I labored for him one winter when I was down
on my luck
Cold weather sure hard on these machines
and my old bones dont like it much neither
I should probably go on home you know
but I never been much a quitter
Skippy was a pal of mine down Woodstock
I labored for him one winter when I was down
on my luck

Youngsville
02:55
|
|||
Gave you call
Ain't heard from you in a while
you say your doing fine
but I know that you lie
I heard they put you in again
when you getting out this time
i heard a Blue Jay scream
trouble down the line
We should have known
All Along
You weren't long for this world
You weren't long for this world
They say that your not sharp
but you did the best with what you got
you had a good thing going
they come
take it all away
Up in Youngsville
I used to climb the hill
She'd say
what did you see
till that ride down Shandalee
We should of known
all along
you weren't long for this world

Potters Porch
03:32
|
|||
I was a young man
New England
took a room on a potters porch
she was a great lover of women and men
I thought she'd love me too of course
Twas a blizzard one morn
she took me up on
a ruin, trestle bridge
I asked her what we doing here?
she says we all gotta get our kicks
Took a small job in a tiny cafe
served hot soup warm bread
come by the oven
its cold and you might catch sick
drifters came from near and far
I heard Cajun I heard Jazz
I heard a whole lotta good
things in there too bad they never
even had a chance
OOOOOOO is that a storm coming in?
turn off the lights say goodnight,
never coming back this way
again
Lilly lent me a violin
go on get out of here
this is your best bet
I rosined up the bow
made myself welcome where I
roamed
The desert floor was cold
the sky was purple black
it ain't much like they say it is
except for maybe that
I ended up where I started singing in a barroom
walking in the woods
not a dollar to me name
it never felt so good
OOOOOOOO is that a storm coming in?
turn off the lights and say goodnight
never coming back this way
again

I'm Glad
03:17
|
|||
There is a Hemlock tree
in a glen
350 years old
getting older at that
nobody ever cut it down
I hope they never will
I'm glad
that old tree is standing still
There is a old house
In Durham that I know
hand cut beams and a hand dug
well
Nobody from the city
has bought it and fixed it up
I'm glad
those old boards are hanging on
There is a Grey Wolf
out in cold Idaho
she hunts the cattle
the ranchers hate her so
nobodies ever trapped her
and I'm sure they never will
I'm glad
there is a place for her out there
still
There is a neighborhood in Troy
that I know
They some hard working people there
They come from all over the world
no fancy restaurant
no boutique hotel
I'm glad
there is some real folks living
there still

This Time
04:34
|
|||
Stopping by the woods on a snowy
evening
no gifts to give
I know the feeling
Throw a log on the stove
happy new years glad to see it go
Who's gonna feed the Baby-o
there ain't a star out tonight
showing me how to go
there is thieves all along
the path I know
that leads home
You want to get behind the wheel
I'm down to ride you know how I feel
Got nothing to lose at all
if it all goes bad
I take that fall
but ooooommmmmmmmmm
if it all goes right
I got a feelin this time
I was pruning his trees
in the rosy dawn
can't work no strait job
so I just walk on
Frozen oxbow
landing geese
crossing the bridge headed east
Who's gonna feed the Baby-o
there ain't a star out tonight
showing me how to go
there is thieves all along
the path I know
that leads home
You want to get behind the wheel
I'm down to ride you know how I feel
Got nothing to lose at all
if it all goes bad
I take that fall
but ooooommmmmmmmmm
if it all goes right
I got a feelin this time
